Ich bin Studentin.

Tuesday night. It is already Tuesday night. Sometimes I just can't believe how fast the days go by. Life this week is life and it is real life (because we have actual school assignments to accomplish). That sounds dumb, I know, but it is less about being tourists and more about being people of Austria. We are now all settled in and coming to the realization that we are not here for a short trip or for a vacation, but to live our lives and STUDY. Apparently that is the whole point of this program. Go figure! :)

Anyways, this week has not been too thrilling, besides the fact that we are still living in Europe, which that in itself is extremely thrilling! :) It is kind of a normal week compared to this great weekend, but not everything in life is always full of constant excitement. Yesterday started the first of the more fall-ish weather. It was actually kind of cold all day and ended up extra rainy. Like always, we had German class and we were learning verbs about eating and drinking and wanting things. Our teacher started calling on us asking us what we were drinking and then we started talking, in German of course, about what we wanted. People were mostly saying how they wanted sleep and coffee and things like that. Anyways, I can't remember who, but someone said that they wanted a Dr. Pepper. Our teacher got so excited and confused because she had never heard of this. It was so interesting to see her react. She went on and on about what a "Mr. Pepper" was and it was the funniest thing! Near where we live, there is a store where they actually sell Dr. Pepper, so we promised to bring her one the next day. She was so happy! I will fill you in more on what happened when I start talking about today's class. Well, class ended and we started Humanities. Since we were supposed to have a test on Tuesday, you could tell that everyone was very anxious. There was just so much information and not much time left for studying. Overwhelming. We had to just accept the fact that we were going to be tested on a TON of information that I knew so little about: the ancient world! After class, we went home, I wrote a paper comparing our experience to a movie we watched the other day, read more of Night, and tried to study. I had dinner here to save a little money and then later me and Kaley decided to head to a cafe to study and get a change of scenery. We wanted to go to a cafe that we had heard so many good things about, so I looked up the address and had a general idea of the location. By now it was raining, so we ventured out to the U-bahn stop in the rain, rode to our destination, and started to look around. Well, we couldn't find the place. It was the biggest struggle of my life and it was raining, cold, dark, and overall just no fun. My shoes were soaked, my pant legs were getting soaked, my nose was cold, and I was wasting valuable study time. I was starting to get in a really bad mood when all of a sudden, it hit me. This was going to be one hilarious memory and I just started laughing. I was going to make the best out of the situation. Luckily, we knew another cafe was close by and even open later, so we decided since we were freezing cold now, we could not turn around. So, we went to Cafe Hawelka after probably 30 minutes of almost torture (haha) and I was finally happy. Then, I realized my blood sugar was extremely low. It was just one thing after another. But, I got my coffee and I was happy. We also got these plum-filled pastries that this cafe is famous for and this was our study encouragement. THEY WERE SO GOOD!

It was really neat to be studying. IN A CAFE. IN VIENNA. How crazy! After studying for a while, we decided to head back since we didn't know how late the last U-bahn ran and we sure as heck did not want to have to find another way home and we needed no more adventures!

After the long day of studying yesterday, today was test day. Ughh. I woke up so nervous and with feelings of being extremely unprepared. Nothing could be done now. Well, except go to German class. It was great as usual. And our teacher got her "Mr. Pepper." When we gave it to her, we told her to drink it and she was like "for BREAKFAST?!?" Well, I guess she fell into peer pressure, because she drank it and loved it! And then kept saying phrases in german about HER dr. pepper! too much fun! Then, the test. We all brought our laptops with us (macs overpowered, OF COURSE!) and after a small issue, we took our test online. It was supposed to be 150 questions, which I was okay with because the chance of doing better was a little higher, but it ended up only be 75 questions. I did terrible. This was not the way I wanted to start the semester. I honestly think that I went into a depression after the test, because I went back to my room and slept for four hours straight and have since just been doing things around my room. Oh and it doesn't help  my "depression" that it was been dark and rainy all day! (sorry, it sounds like I am complaining a ton...) I am really anxious to figure out if there will be a curve, like mentioned, and if there will be anything I can do, because you just don't understand how utterly terrible I did. Not okay. But, it's over and I now know what I need to do differently in studying and taking notes. I guess this is all just a learning experience. Right now my only comfort is the fact that I am listening to Natalie Merchant, my go-to comfort music (DON'T JUDGE ME!!! :) and the fact that I just talked to my mom and sister for a couple minutes! Tomorrow will be better because there is no test, we will discuss the book that we all just read (which happens to be VERY good), and then we will prepare to leave for our weekend trip! SCHOOL IS ONLY THREE DAYS LONG THIS WEEK! Long weekend, here I come!

  1. Well, I know you know that Natalie Merchant is MY go to music also. Don't judge me either, Grace! Well, I like that you now know you have to study and take notes differently. That is a big part of college...knowing how to study. Power through it...you will come out ok I am sure. I love you! Mom
